Review: Black Men Rock

“In his latest book, Black Men Rock! 10 Keys to Empowering Black Men to Live Extraordinary Lives, author Michael Taylor approaches the matter of being a black man in America with thoughtfulness and grace. This book challenges the concept of traditional manhood in the African American community by encouraging black men to step outside of the box society has placed them in, and allowing themselves to grow into the loving and productive people they are capable of being. Taylor dismisses the notion of limitations due to skin color and racism. The author states plainly his belief that black men are in control of their own destinies.

Taylor begins his discussion of black manhood by sharing a story about the abuse he suffered as a child while living with his paternal grandmother. He refers to this time in his life frequently when discussing the changes he has made to become a happier and more productive adult. He also discusses his close relationship with his paternal grandfather, who helped him understand that he must “play the hand he was dealt.” That included embracing the good and the bad that comes with being a black man in America. Taylor is adamant in his belief that it is not a disadvantage to be a black man. He does not view himself as a victim. He recognizes that black people have overcome a number of obstacles and continue to live and prosper in a country that for a very long time offered them only shackles and hated.

Taylor gifts the reader with ten principles for creating a healthy and prosperous life that is not limited by the negativity often associated with black manhood. The author encourages black men to develop their minds, bodies, and souls; to develop a positive attitude and surround themselves with like-minded people; and he stresses the importance of personal relationships and giving back to the community. Taylor also addresses managing personal finances and learning modern technology. He urges black men to see themselves as more than the negative images the media presents of black people.

One of the most impressive parts of this book is Taylor’s emphasis on the power of self-perception. He repeatedly stresses that, what a man believes about himself influences how he lives his life. Taylor illustrates this idea by sharing his struggles with racism, depression, and financial loss. The author advocates for a paradigm shift that eliminates the victim mentality derived from slavery and the days of Jim Crow. Taylor supports the belief that black men can improve their lives and relationships by deciding that they are men, who happen to be black.

The author writes in a respectful, conversational tone, like a trusted friend who understands the problems black men face because he has overcome them himself. His approach is direct, but not preachy or intimidating. Taylor offers black men an option that many may not realize is available to them: the choice to be who they believe they are and not who society tells them they are. Black Men Rock! is empowering, inspirational—necessary. This is a book that can transform lives. I highly recommend it.” –Melissa Brown Levine, Independent Professional Book Reviewers
